Ready for the Recital

Ready for the Recital
Oil, 14x11 inches

The room where I teach my adult art classes is also used for a number of arts related purposes, and I had wanted to paint this elegant baby grand piano for quite a while. With the onset of the holidays, my studio neighbor hosts annual music recitals, and I couldn't wait to take advantage of the opportunity to paint this beautiful, still model with the north light cascading through the windows. I had an afternoon off. I can now check this off my bucket list. ©2016 Christine Tierney

My Sweet Indulgence

My Sweet Indulgence
Pastel, 8 x 5.5 inches

OK, so I admit I finished off the ice cream. My favorite flavor, and, well...
Seeing the empty carton sitting on my counter, it struck me as a whimsical subject for a painting. What more can I say?

Sailboat on Superior

Sailboat on Superior
Oil, Plein Air, 14 x 11 inches

This was painted during the Grand Marais (Minnesota) Art Colony Plein Air event in September - the skies changed so rapidly it was hard to keep up with their movement! I was drawn to the way the warm light played on the boat, the flag, the buoys, and the dinghy, in contrast to the cold choppy water slapping all around. I hoped that the moored boat would be a captive model for me during my painting session. The stationary lighthouse stands guard in the background.

Yellow Shoppe Under Full Moon

Yellow Shoppe Under Full Moon
Oil, 11 x 6 inches

This little yellow book shoppe sits nestled between Lake Superior and Highway 61 in Grand Marais, Minnesota. I started this painting during the Grand Marais Art Colony's Plein Air 2016 but never finished it. It only took a short time in studio to put the finishing touches on it.

This painting is currently on display in the Marjorie McNeely Gallery of the Como Conservatory in Saint Paul, MN. Painted en plein air (outdoors, on site), and of course the birds kept shifting.

Evening at the Mediterranean Cruise

Evening at the Mediterranean Cruise
Oil, 14 x 11, Plein Air Nocturne

I was attracted to the vibrant colors of this scene, so I chose my vantage point and set up my easel across the street, shortly before sunset. Then I waited for dark. As the sun went down and the sky became a beautiful deep indigo, the neon lights came to life! I was excited to paint, and the September evening provided pleasant temperatures and a nice breeze.

Three's a Crowd

Three's a Crowd
Pastel, 8.5 inches x 12 inches

And now for something a bit different: It is very hot outside, and I'm staying cool in the studio. I have not painted with pastels for quite a while so I opened up my new Heilman pastel box and set up a simple fruit still life, just to give myself a jump-start.

Here is the result of my afternoon. I couldn't help but feel as if the two pears on the left were whispering about the one on the right.

Three's a crowd.

Mother's Day Roses

Mother's Day Roses
Oil on linen, 20x16 inches

A surprise Mother's Day gift from my daughter and son-in-law. It was obvious that the UPS man was happy to be delivering something he knew would bring joy to the recipient! What a day brightener, and much appreciated. I knew I had to paint them right away, so I rushed to the studio and got busy.

Tomatoes and Shallots (revisited)

Tomatoes and Shallots (revisited)
Oil, 9 x 12 inches

I've been sorting through stacks of paintings in my studio. When I ran into this one, I almost put it in the reject pile. Instead, I put it on the easel and made some bold changes, including removing a garden tool that I never really cared for.
This painting was originally done as a demonstration during the Eagan Harvest of Arts Festival.

An Art Joke from Jacob

Now for something on the lighter side:
Look out, Leonardo!

I had my young students at Rukavina Academy draw the Mona Lisa upside down (they didn't know what they were drawing until they finished and turned their papers right-side up!)

Then I shared some information about the Mona Lisa painting, and some facts about the famous artist and inventor Leonardo da Vinci.

Student Jacob invented a joke:

Question: "What do you call a Crab that does art?"

Jacob's Answer: "Leonardo da Pinchi"

He then drew this picture of his clever joke and I promised him I would post it on my blog.

My students amaze me with their artistic insights. Thanks for making my day, Jacob!

A Kodak Moment

A Kodak Moment
Oil, 8.5 inches x 6.5 inches

My parents had a camera just like this when I was a little girl. I remember the classic black and white photos they took every holiday and birthday, and the old film canisters that had to be unwound and threaded into the back of the camera. I didn't realize at the time how precious those awkward, silly photos would become in the later part of my life.

Thunder, Lightning, and a Violet Sunset

Triptych Commission:
Thunder, Lightning, and a Violet Sunset
Acrylic, 24 x 84 x 3 inches

I was commissioned last year to paint an abstract triptych. The theme was left up to me. It took me a while to even come up with a starting point. Being the careful and calculated type, I did lots of research and sketches and thorough planning. But things don't always turn out the way we plan...

At last I began painting on the center panel, with a solid plan in mind. Using a large brush, I made marks on the canvas but my painting was slowly taking me in a different direction. The strong abstract shapes I started with were being morphed into waves and water, which morphed into fire, which then morphed into cloud formations. I let it sit and "mellow" on my easel for a while. I was certain that middle panel was meant to be horizontally oriented. Then a group of artist friends visited my studio and they all debated over the painting, making me turn it every which way. They emphatically agreed that a vertical orientation was THE way the painting needed to be viewed. They claimed they could feel a strong sense of movement from left to right. I disagreed, but with a half-hearted attempt at being open-minded, I left the canvas sitting on the easel in the position they voted on.

I'd walk into studio every day and look at the painting. Still not convinced, but knowing I needed to keep working, I set up 2 more easels, one on the left and one on the right, and placed the other two canvases on the easels and started painting.

I was inspired to place a lightning bolt in the middle panel. I was excited, but when my husband came to my studio to look at the painting he scowled, saying I had ruined it by adding the lightning bolt. So, I had hit a roadblock again…And I let the painting sit for a bit while I struggled with the nagging idea that I had indeed ruined it.

But deep in my heart I knew I had hit on a theme: Left panel: Thunder rolling in - Center panel: Lightning Bolt -- and the final panel had to be a Violet Sunset. OK, now you're probably wondering where did all this come from? Well, it so happens that the middle names of the couple's two young boys just happen to be Thunder, and Lightning, and the youngest child is a beautiful little girl named Violet Sunset. After that divine inspiration I knew I was on the right track. I let the brush dance and the paint flow until I just knew I was finished.

The painting titles are tastefully hand-lettered on the top of each of the gallery-wrapped canvases. The family is very happy with the finished trio of paintings, which are now hanging in their home in New York City. And I can go on to my next project!

A Walk on the Lake

A Walk on the Lake
Pastel

This is a portion of a larger plein air piece I painted a few years ago on Prior Lake while my husband and son did some ice fishing. We are having sub-zero weather here in Minnesota, and I decided to stay warm inside my studio. Rummaging through some older paintings I found this one and cropped it. A simple snow scene with the soft colors of a late winter day, it makes me want to sip hot chocolate in front of the fire.

Clarinet

CLARINET
First Painting of 2016

This old clarinet has been in my studio for years begging to be painted but I didn't have the strength to tackle all the hardware. At last I pulled it off the shelf, posed it next to my easel, and put on a Benny Goodman CD and painted away. And, yes, I did play the clarinet "back in the day".
Oil, 16.5 x 5.25 inches. $175 unframed.
